Raising teenagers are difficult. Unlike adults, teenagers cannot control their temperaments and that they live in a world of their own. This is the reason why it is so difficult for some parents to raise Christian teenagers. Although Christian teens already have solid foundations on morality and the teachings of the Bible, it is still a tough job considering that the world is full of many temptations that can easily break their morals.
Establish Open Communication Lines With Your Children
One way to raise Christian teenagers is for parents to always open the line of communication between them and their children. Teens are sometimes unreasonable and they are always ready to respond to any reasons. However, if all lines of communication are open, teenagers will easily understand why they are prohibited in doing some things that they want to do. It is also important to instill respect among children so that they will also learn how to respect other people when they grow up.
When it comes to communicating with children, it is also important for parents to lend their ears to their teenagers. Although they may lack experiences in their lives, teenagers do know some modern day wisdom that we do not know. By lending them our ears, we give them the idea that they we respect them for what they have to say to us.
Let Children Follow The Steps Of Christ
Part of being a teenager is self-discovery and this is the time when teenagers push their limits thus rebellion is common among teens. As a parent, it is your responsibility to guide your Christian teenager while he or she is growing up. They are bound to be very curious with everything that they see around them thus it is your role help them develop a good relationship with God so that they can follow Jesus’ footsteps all the way. As what Psalm 119:9 (NIV) said “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” This means that parents should help their children guard their morality so that they will grow up as responsible Christians in the future.
Let Teenagers Understand That Christ Is Their Role Model
Teenagers follow a lot of role models and they can be athletes, models, actors, actresses or musicians. Having a role model is good because it allows teenagers to become more motivated. However, would it be better to teach children to be inspired by Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ should be at the center of the lives of Christian teenagers. This can be done if parents instill in their children the love for God by setting the right examples to them.
Being a Christian teenager does not mean being left behind by mainstream society. In fact, there are lots of fun things about being a Christian teenager. Today, there are now Christian rock bands or even hip music and video games that teenagers can enjoy without being influenced by too much temptation in the world.
